Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) / IEC 61508
The IEC 61508 standard is the international standard for electrical, electronic and programmable electronic safety related systems. It sets out the requirements for ensuring that systems are designed, implemented, operated and maintained to provide the required safety integrity level (SIL). Four SILs are defined according to the risks involved in the system application, with SIL 4 being applied for the highest risks.
The IEC 61508 was written to provide a method to determine the required reliability of instrumented safety functions and ensure that they are designed and followed up throughout engineering and operation. OLF GL 070 was established as a guideline for implementation in the Norwegian oil and gas industry, and Lilleaker participated in the development of this guideline. We have extensive experience from implementation of IEC 61508 in all phases of offshore projects and can offer assistance in:
-
HAZID/risk analysis to determine if instrumented safety systems are required
-
Allocation of SIL levels/requirements to instrumented safety systems
-
Designing safety systems to comply with IEC 61508 / 61511
-
Performing reliability calculations for instrumented safety systems to prove compliance with IEC 61508 / 61511
-
Developing Safety Requirement Specifications (SRS) for the systems
-
Developing Safety Analysis Reports (SAR)
-
Verification, Validation and running of Functional Safety Assessments (FSA)
-
Prepare procedures for function testing
-
Preparing systems for follow-up of SIL during operations
